So you want to dress your baby like an equestrian

I get asked all the time where I find Tallulah’s equestrian outfits, so I am here to share!

I hadn’t bought more than a few onesies and clothing essentials a few months prior to her birth, because honestly I wasn’t sure how I even wanted to dress my baby. I figured once she was born we would figure that out!

One thing I was certain of though was that I would be dressing her as a tiny equestrian.

On one particular shopping trip I stepped foot into a Janie and Jack’s for the first time. The clothes are cute, but I wasn’t sure if they would be Tallulah’s style or not (I envisioned her as cool baby, not so much a bows and frills baby). I was casually looking through the racks and do you know what I found?!!! In the clearance section?!! For $5 each?!!!

Up until that moment I had so wrongly believed that Tallulah wouldn’t be able to dress like my mini me until she was much older and could fit into the kids clothes I could find at Dover Saddlery.

I suddenly had so many questions and as I perused the racks of Janie and Jack I found other horsey themed clothing made for tiny babies as small as newborn sizes! I’m talkin’ ponchos, quilted vests, tall boots, even little jackets!

One of the outfits I had planned for Lulah to wear at LRK3DE (Land Rover Kentucky 3 Day Event). She didn’t get to wear it there since the event was cancelled this year due to Covid, but we got some great pics in it at home! The poncho, plaid breeche…

She didn’t get to wear it there since the event was cancelled this year due to Covid, but we got some great pics in it at home! The poncho, plaid breeches, and tall riding boots are all from Janie and Jack.

I’ve made many trips and online purchases since that initial visit, though I’m sad to say I don’t know for sure if their equestrian line which seemed to be continuously evolving with new prints and colors will be coming back. I emailed Janie and Jack to find out for sure, but it could be a while before I get a response due to Covid and the overwhelming amount of emails they are receiving. Stay tuned!

In the mean time, you can do what I’ve been doing- utilize the various websites that sell gently used baby clothes.

You can still find cute printed leggings that could sub for breeches/jods and definitely some cute blazers/jackets directly from Janie and Jack!

I’ve also been able to find some really cute pieces on eBay, but keep in mind some people don’t have a clue that they are baby riding clothes, which just means you may not have great results by searching “Janie and Jack breeches” but you rather “Janie and Jack riding” or “Janie and Jack horse”

If you’re looking for horsey themed attire and not specifically mini equestrian pieces, I have found some cute horse print onesies, hats, and dresses from Kate Quinn Organics. However, it seems they come out with a print in a collection and once it’s gone it’s gone. That just means you have to keep an eye out for any horse prints (I follow them on Instagram) and buy the print in several different sizes so your baby will have pieces to wear as they grow. They even had a cowboy collection!

While visiting my Dad and Stepmom in Pittsburgh a few months back, I found a super cute horse print romper by Tea Collection at a boutique. After looking online, turns out they usually have a few horse/pony print items available, so I’d suggest looking there too. Just type “horse” or “pony” in the search line.

Etsy is also a great source for finding a wide variety of horse print onesies, bibs, hats, pants, you name it and it can probably be created. My Dad had sent me a pair of horse print pants from a store called Lifeislovely4, which I absolutely loved. Tallulah grew out of them and I wanted another pair in the next size up, so I found her store on Etsy and messaged her. Unfortunately she didn’t have the same print available any longer, but she sent me several options of horse prints that she could use to make me the same style of pants! Highly recommend!

Horseplay Apparel is a company I’ve worked with for several years as an ambassador. I love doing mommy and me themed photo shoots with my little, so I asked the owner, Megan, if she could print some matching items for me if I provided the baby clothes and she said yes! It never hurts to ask! They have made baby clothes in the past too, so maybe they’ll make a comeback! They do have some super cute items in their Children’s line if you have older kids.

I do intend to do a western themed photo shoot with Lulah at some point as well, and have had success finding everything from jeans to diaper covers to western collared onesies from Wrangler. Depending on the size of your baby, you can find adorable knit cowboy hat and boot sets on Etsy. So cute! Ariat also makes super cute baby cowboy boots!

You may find horse print/themed items at places like Carter’s or Old Navy, you just have to be on the lookout. The tiny paddock boots in the first photo and the photo below are actually chelsea boots that I found from Old Navy! Of course, they were a little big on her at first and she has grown into them nicely.
